Washington DC Area Teens Win Business Plan Contest
Written on February 16, 2008 by Amanda M. Gladden
Nicole Jenkins and David Toledo both Parkdale High School seniors, scored a $750.00 second place prize from the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship local business plan competition.
They competed with a full business plan for a tutoring company, Top of the Charts Tutoring including marketing strategies, monthly and yearly projections, and goals. A total of 1,600 students entered the competition.
The students tutor their class mates in Algebra and other subjects, charging a very reasonable $20.00 per hour fee. They keep their overhead low by using the public library in their county and the library on the campus of the University of Maryland to meet and tutor their clients.
Way to go Nicole and David!!

I think what is just as critical to the actual award is that they are teaching students lessons they would not learn from any textbook or lecture. With so much of our GDP in the US coming from small businesses with under 20 employees it’s high time we start instilling some of the free business spirit in teens while in school.

That is a great accomplishment for them! That is a lot of people to compete with, and it is great that they are already earning money before the award. I’m glad that our educational system seems to be getting better. I just heard that a junior, Daniel Burd won an award for creating a bacteria that decomposes plastic bags.
