O, The Oprah Magazine and The White House Project have partnered up with American Express to offer a three-day leadership training program for 80 women who demonstrate leadership potential.
To get one of the 80 coveted spots, you must enter the Women Rule! contest and explain your commitment to leadership, your project or idea, and a few other things.
According to the Women Rule! site:
Women Rule! will propel women to break through the barriers to their leadership and develop fully their vision for change. Women Rule! will reach women who are ready to step forward and lead in business, in philanthropy, in politics, in the community and in the public square.

In keeping with Woman Start Your Business Now’s theme of helping you locate money to get things done, here are 3 places to search for tax credits and state assistance programs available to encourage you to institute some home improvements to conserve energy.
I.
Research and take advantage of available tax credits and grants in your locale
In the United State, the IRS currently offers tax credits (a credit reduces the amount of taxes owed to the government) to consumers, home builders and commercial buildings to encourage energy conservation.
Tax credits are possible for home improvements such as adding insulation, replacing old leaky windows with more energy efficient ones as well as replacing heating and cooling systems. This tax credit applies to improvements made to your primary residence from January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2007.

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award launched October 1, 2007. Though this is not directly related to opening a typical business, it will ultimately catapult one lucky author’s writing business and career. Here are the details.
Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel Award is open to writers from more than 20 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Japan. Authors can enter their unpublished English-language novel manuscript for consideration through Amazon’s CreateSpace website starting October 1 through November 5, 2007 or whenever the first 5,000 entries have been received, whichever is earlier. (CreateSpace is a self-publishing platform that enables authors, filmmakers and musicians to create and sell books, DVDs and CDs on demand).

Rebecca Game, founder of Digital Women, a group I have been a member of for a few years, guest posts this week giving some insight on all the ads we see claiming there is “free government money” to start a business here in the U.S.A really true. Please note she writes about Federal grants not the type of grants listed on this blog that are all from private sector organizations.
It’s posted all over the Internet. You hear it on the radio, and see it on television. The United States government is giving away free money in the form of federal grants. While it’s true that the government does indeed award $400 billion annually through its 26 federal entities, the statement of free money through the government doesn’t exactly pinpoint the definition of a federal grant.

The Whirlpool Corporation is again running it’s Whirlpool Brand Mother of Invention Grant program. If you are a mom with a great product innovation, invention, service or business idea, you should enter this competition.
What kind of idea you ask–well, make sure you don’t send any ideas about appliances. Those will be disqualified. Whirlpool is looking for all new product innovation, invention, service or business ideas except those about appliances or appliance components.
According to the website, ” the 2007 Whirlpool Brand Mother of Invention Grant will provide moms with the necessary business resources, such as seed money and expert advice, helping to make business dreams a reality”.
